How much does a GCSE maths tutor cost?

GCSE maths tutoring on StudyGuru costs between £24 and £45 per hour depending on the tutor's experience band, and new families can try 4 sessions at £15 each with the Starter Pack. Across the UK, online GCSE maths tutors typically charge between £20 and £60+ per hour. See full pricing details.

How do online GCSE maths lessons work?

Each lesson is a 60-minute, one-to-one session in the browser, with no downloads needed. Tutor and student solve problems together on a shared interactive whiteboard with HD video, working through algebra, geometry and exam technique step by step. Parents receive an AI-generated summary after every session.

Is online maths tutoring as good as in-person?

For most families, yes. Online GCSE maths tutoring removes the constraints of geography and travel: your child works with a vetted, DBS-checked tutor from home, with no journey to a tutor's house or stranger in yours. Sessions are easier to schedule around school and other commitments, and our interactive whiteboard is purpose-built for maths — drawing diagrams, writing equations and solving problems together in real time, exactly as you would on paper, with HD video alongside.

Common Questions About Maths Tutoring

Everything parents ask about booking a lesson, our experienced tutors, and preparing for GCSE maths exams.

What are the most-tested topics in GCSE Maths?
Across AQA, Edexcel, and OCR, four areas account for roughly three-quarters of GCSE Maths marks: algebra (around 25–30%), ratio, proportion and rates of change (15–20%), geometry and measure (around 20%), and number (around 15%). Statistics and probability cover the remainder. For Higher tier students aiming for grade 7+, the highest-leverage topics to drill are advanced algebra (quadratics, simultaneous equations, sequences) and trigonometry beyond right-angle triangles — these account for a disproportionate share of grade 7–9 marks.
How is GCSE Maths structured — what are the three papers?
GCSE Maths is examined across three written papers, each 1.5 hours and worth 80 marks. Paper 1 is non-calculator; Papers 2 and 3 allow a calculator. All three papers cover the full specification — there are no topic-specific papers — so students must be confident across the entire syllabus before sitting any of them. AQA, Edexcel, and OCR all follow this structure, though question style and wording differ slightly between boards.
What's the difference between AQA, Edexcel, and OCR GCSE Maths?
All three boards cover the same content but have distinct question styles. Edexcel (Pearson) is the most popular UK exam board and is known for context-heavy 'real world' problems with longer wording. AQA is generally seen as the clearest in question phrasing, with cleaner mark schemes. OCR (J560) tends to use more abstract questions and is slightly less common in state schools. Switching boards mid-Year 11 is rarely worthwhile — past-paper familiarity matters more than board choice. Always practise with your child's specific board's papers.
What's the difference between Foundation and Higher tier GCSE Maths?
Foundation tier covers grades 1–5 across the same three papers; Higher tier covers grades 4–9. Higher includes additional topics not on Foundation: quadratic equations and the quadratic formula, advanced trigonometry, surds, vectors, circle theorems, exponential growth, and iteration. The trade-off is that Higher questions are harder overall, but the upside is access to grades 6–9. Schools usually decide tier entry by January of Year 11 based on mock results. If your child needs grade 6+ for sixth form or A-Level entry, Higher is the only option.
Can my child realistically move from Foundation to Higher tier mid-Year 11?
Yes, with structured preparation. The transition requires 4–6 weeks of focused work to cover Higher-only topics (quadratics, advanced trig, surds, circle theorems) and to practise the harder question style. The window typically closes by November or December of Year 11 when schools finalise tier entry for the summer exam series — so the decision needs to be made early in the academic year for a clean switch.
How can I tell if my child is quietly struggling with GCSE Maths?
The most common signs are subtle: avoiding maths homework or rushing through it, claiming 'it's fine' but never showing you marks, drops in mock scores not matched by perceived effort, and confusion when explaining a method out loud. Many bright students mask difficulties for months because the topics they once found easy now require new techniques. Watching for the pattern matters more than any single signal.
Should we get a GCSE Maths tutor over the summer holidays?
Summer tutoring can prevent the well-documented 'summer slide' in maths — students typically lose 1–2 months of maths progress over a 6-week break with no engagement. For students at risk of dropping a tier (Foundation slipping below grade 4, or Higher slipping below grade 6), 4–6 sessions across August can stabilise progress and rebuild confidence before September. For students already on track, summer is better used for early exposure to Higher-only topics or targeted weak-area work.
How does the GCSE Maths Higher mark scheme actually work?
GCSE Maths Higher papers use a method-marks system: students earn marks for showing correct method even if the final answer is wrong. Roughly 40% of marks on harder questions are method marks, which means crossing out working can cost a grade. Teaching exam technique (always show working clearly, never erase complete attempts) is often worth more than additional content revision. Grade boundaries shift each year but typically: grade 7 ≈ 50%, grade 8 ≈ 65%, grade 9 ≈ 80%.
